2004-2005 Minglers
This is the list of regional and national meetings that took place in 2004-2005 throughout Canada.
Centre
Université Laval (Quebec City, QC), November 2004
In November 2004, the members of the “GLOBALIA” project team at Université Laval trained their Network colleagues on this simulation game dealing with governance and social issues related to globalization so that they might have the opportunity of using “GLOBALIA” as part of their own activities. Students and professors belonging to seven Delegations from the Québec City, Montréal, Sherbrooke and Ottawa areas participated in these training sessions.
East
Mount Allison University (Sackville, N-B), January 2005
In January 2005, the Delegation from Mount Allison University (New Brunswick) hosted the Network meeting for the Atlantic Provinces. As part of a conference held by the Atlantic International Studies Organization (ATLIS), students organized a round-table discussion on “Our International Responsibilities: Human Rights and Canadian Foreign Policy.” Wayne MacKay, Interim Chair of the Board of Directors of Rights & Democracy, was one of the participants. We thank Mark McLaughlin, of Foreign Affairs Canada (FAC), who was also in attendance at this regional event, part of a project designed to encourage dialogue with and among the Canadian public.
West
University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, SK), February 2005
During the Network’s February 2005 regional event in the Western provinces, students from the University of Saskatchewan presented their chief recommendations relating to our project on Canadian foreign policy. The involvement of the local members of the Canadian Council for International Affairs (CCIA) who made this activity an enriching intergenerational experience. We thank François Dupuis of FAC, who also took part.
National Mingler
Rights and Democracy (Montreal, QC), March 23-24, 2005
In March 2005, we held our second annual “Mingler” in Montréal. Representatives of our Delegations from across Canada were on hand to discuss their vision of the Network with us.
At this event, which coincided with a meeting of the Rights & Democracy Board of Directors on March 23 and 24, the Coordinators and key members of our Rights & Democracy Delegations from across the country had the opportunity to:
- discuss the various projects they had undertaken within their respective campuses and communities;
- review the lessons they had learned about effective ways to mobilize the student population;
- contribute to the planning of activities of the Rights & Democracy Network for the upcoming academic year.
This national meeting enables us to reinforce the ties that unite the students, explore innovative ideas and strengthen the shared values upon which our Network is founded.
