World Urban Forum: Community-building in Ethnically Diverse Cities
June 21, 2006
At the 3rd World Urban Forum in Vancouver, BC, the Malaspina Delegation hosted and event entitled “Community-building in Ethnically Diverse Cities”, a presentation and discussion of creative ideas and street level initiatives aimed at solving conflicts, reducing inequality, and expanding political representation in multicultural communities, both locally and abroad.

Remembrance and Renewal: A National Day of Action
December 6, 2006
The Delegation at Malaspina University-College hosted the 2nd annual Nanaimo Women’s Centre fundraiser. The event featured performances showcasing local artists, and then heir work was sold at a silent auction.

The Nanaimo Rights & Democracy Radio Hour
A weekly one-hour radio show that examines human rights, democracy and ethical travel.

World Community Film Fest & Student Film Award
February 2007
As part of the annual Film Fest of the Delegation, the student film award is presented to a student filmmaker to enable him or her, with the help of a mentor, to produce a short documentary over the course of the year on issues pertaining to human rights and democratic development. The documentary will be shown at the World Community Film Festival 2007 in Nanaimo.

The Delegation organized a forum on the situation of Colombian and Canadian Indigenous groups, focusing on issues related to land rights, water access and culture.

The Status of Women in Africa: a Report on Sexual Assault Legislation in Africa
In collaboration with Rights & Democracy’s consultant working at the African Commission of Human and Peoples’ Rights, a group of students undertook a study for the Special Rapporteur on Women’s Rights in Africa.

Western Regional Event: Culture, Human Rights & Democracy
February 27-28, 2007
Hosted by the Rights & Democracy Delegation at First Nations University in Regina in Saskatchewan, this regional event was an opportunity to explore the relation between culture and human rights through humor, traditional ceremonies and workshops. It was also the launch of the first issue of the Rights & Democracy Network Magazine on Culture, Human Rights and Democracy.

UN 101 Workshop
This interactive workshop offered students an introduction to the basic structures and actors within the UN, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the inner workings of the newly formed Human Rights Council.

UN 201 Workshop
In this interactive workshop, the Delegation presents a case study on the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. The participants were asked to act on behalf of those whose rights have been violated, thereby learning how civil society interacts with the UN and how the instruments of the UN are practically used.

Human Rights Benefit Concert

A Human Rights Action Week Benefit Concert, presented by the Rights and Democracy Delegation at Global College, in collaboration with the University of Winnipeg Society of Politics Students, in support of the University of Winnipeg’s Human Rights & Social Justice Conference, with all the proceeds going to “Welcome Place”, a local refugee support service.

Ontario Regional Event: USHIFT - Making Sustainable, Healthy, Innovative and Fair Transitions, on University Campuses
March 3-4, 2007
This event raised awareness among Delegations on the issues surrounding Corporate and Consumers Social Responsibility, and allowed students to create a plan to implement more conscious and sustainable practices in their own universities. The activities included an Oxfam Hunger Banquet and an Ethical Fashion Show.

Out of the Shadows - Voices from the Global Sex Trade
March 13, 2007
The event raised awareness of human rights violations directed at women and girls through trafficking in the global sex trade and to encourage participants to take action in their communities. A public information-action forum opened the event, followed by the presentation of the documentary “Sex slave” by Ric Esther Bienstock. A panel discussion with representatives from Amnesty international, EQUITAS, the High Commissioner for Refugees, the RCMP closed the evening.

Bring Human Rights Home: An Exhibition of Voices Against Violence
November 20-December 8, 2006
This exhibition featured children's creative responses to the issue of violence in the home, in the community and at the global level. The goal of the project was to bring attention to the harm caused by violence and to promote discussion about non-violent alternatives. Workshops were held at local elementary schools and drawings were selected from each participating class.

World Peace Forum
June 23-28, 2006
At the World Peace Forum 2006, held in Vancouver, British Columbia, students from McGill University’s Delegation ran a workshop on how they created the successful “Let's Teach Human Rights” project, and how similar projects can be initiated by other interested groups.

Luncheon: the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights ( Midi-causerie: la Commission africaine des droits de l’Homme et des Peuples)
February 2007
Ndiaga Loum, consultant with the Special Rapporteur on prisons and conditions at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ rights, talked about the work of the Commission, the African Charter and the challenges surrounding the creation of the African court. A lively discussion followed its presentation, centered on an anthropological analysis of the African society and the rule of law.

Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark

The Delegation at Bishop's University presented: "Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark". Sixteen actors interpreted Ariel Dorfman's play, based on the book "Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World", by Kerry Kennedy Cuomo and edited by Nan Richardson.

On the Refugees’ Path 2006 ( Sur la piste des réfugiés 2006 )

With the support of the founding team of the project at Université Laval, the Delegation at Sherbrooke recreated the interactive experience of “40 hours in the life of a refugee”, where 40 participants explore many facets of refugees’ realities, which included an information forum, conferences, a roundtable, a theatrical reading and testimonies.

The Delegation at Laval University presented the first satellite project which included a photo exhibition, conferences on the international protection of refugees and on refugees' integration in Quebec. Storytelling and music close the evening.

Participation in International Development Week
February 1-9, 2007
The Université Laval Delegation participated in the creation of a coalition on campus working together to promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). A week of activities was organized during International Development Week.

Globalia
Globalia is an educational game that makes the links between globalization and its effects on the respect for human rights and development. The Globalia team played the game in high schools and cegeps across Quebec. In August 2007, the team presented the game in Edmonton at the Global Youth Assembly, an event that promoted human rights and democracy for 16-25 year olds.

Atlantic Regional Event: Gender, Religion and Human Rights
March 16, 2007
With the participation of representatives from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and through student presentations, the event explored the theme "Religion, Gender and Human Rights" in an innovative fashion: freedom of expression vs. freedom of religion, caste system in India, the role of religious organizations in development, gay and lesbian rights, etc.

Food to Feed: Freedom from Hunger

The Delegation at Memorial University presented a lecture by Priscilla Claeys, consultant at Rights and Democracy, on the right to food and on her experiences in different fact-finding missions in Brazil and in the Philippines. They also organized a panel discussion, and the screening of the documentary “Silent Killer, The Unfinished Campaign Against Hunger”.

Human Rights Violations in Zimbabwe: What can you do?
October 16 to November 2, 2006
This Canadian university tour with the Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF) gave Mr. Gabriel Shumba, Director of the ZEF and Mrs. Marilyn Tudor, lawyer and human rights advocate based at ZEF, the opportunity to meet with the Canadian government representatives, the private sector, and civil society representatives to discuss their present work in South Africa and Zimbabwe and how Canada can encourage change in Zimbabwe.
