Going Global with the Network

Speech presented at the inauguration of the first international twinning of the Rights & Democracy Network in Moncton and Ouagadougou, November 25, 2004.

By creating a university-based Network, Rights & Democracy deliberately chose to work with the next generation of key actors in international cooperation.

While the Network project was still in its initial planning stages, we had already decided to create mechanisms to pair up various Delegations in Canada with Rights & Democracy Delegations overseas. We refer to this as twinning.

A First Twinning

Burkina Faso

Launched in the fall of 2004, the internationalization phase of the Network has led to a first twinning initiative between the Delegations of the Université de Moncton in New Brunswick and the Université de Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso.

Next Twinnings

Morocco

The next twinning will be between the Université de Sherbrooke (Quebec) students and members of the Mohammed V-Souissi and Mohammed V-Agdal Universities Delegations in Rabat (Morocco).

Kenya

A twinning has also been planned between the McGill University delegation (Quebec) and students from the University of Nairobi in Kenya.
