Mingler Participants
Montreal, Canada. March 21-24, 2007. The 1st International meeting of the Network gathered members of the Network from our Delegations in Canada and abroad. During 3 days, participants reflected on the notion of global citizenship and on their role as university students in pushing for changes through their local activities and international exchanges. Participants had the opportunity to present their projects, to brainstorm on future projects and to participate in different sessions notably oriented toward their studies and careers. On the evening of the 21st, student members, Network partners, members and guests came together to celebrate the annual event of the Network. Students from Bishop’s University presented the play Speak truth to power – Voices from beyond the dark, based on interviews with human rights defenders throughout the world. This powerful work, based on Kerry Kennedy and Eddie Adams’ book, definitely moved the audience, highlighting the importance of believing in our force as actors of change.

By celebrating this Day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright
23 April: a symbolic date for world literature for on this date and in the same year of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. […] It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.
The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold.
