Delegations  : What is a Delegation?

A Rights & Democracy Delegation :

> is based on interdisciplinarity, equality and interconnectivity

> creates opportunities for students to get together:

  • to know more about human rights, democratic development and globalization
  • to share ideas, search for solutions, and propose concrete actions

> initiates activities that promote human rights:

  • term projects linked to curricula (e.g. research paper on workers in maquiladoras)
  • film screenings (e.g. on women in Afghanistan)
  • multi-media panel events (e.g. on fashion and fair-trade fabrics)
  • contributions to publications (e.g. Rights & Democracy’s newsletter Libertas) workshops (e.g. on democracy in Haiti)
  • concerts and theatre (e.g. featuring students in fine arts reflecting on human rights)
  • “Common voices” campaigns (e.g. on access HIV/AIDS medicine in Africa)
  • contests (e.g. to design the promotional material for a campaign on the human rights situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo)

> addresses themes relating to human rights, democratic development, and globalization, such as :

  • poverty and human rights; the right to water
  • human rights and the Internet; freedom of expression
  • business and human rights; violence against women in conflict situation
  • the right to education; democracy and youth participation
  • the rights of indigenous peoples; the rights of the child
  • human rights defenders; terrorism and human rights
  • the role of the United Nations; international criminal justice

Rights & Democracy will provide support to the Delegations:

  • administrative tools and tips
  • educational resources and materials
  • a portal within the Rights & Democracy website
  • hints for the design and implementaiton of activities
  • arranging for speakers at seminars, conferences and events
  • advice about networking activities
  • facilitating the presentation of propositions to national and international decision-makers
