Let's teach Human Rights!
The belief that holds us together as teachers is the hope to give students a chance to make the world their own. We devote ourselves to inspire a generation of future leaders and future citizens. The issues of human rights are important in today's society and education.
Welcome to our event!
12h00- Welcoming Ceremony (Education Building Room 129) Theme of Panel Discussion : The role of Human Rights education in the Canadian classroom.
Guest speakers:
- Dr. Jackie Kirk- UNESCO Centre and McGill Centre for Research and Teaching on Women
- Ms. Shirley Sarna- Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse (Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission)
13h00- Introduction to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (Shirley Sarna)
What is the Convention on the Rights of the Child? How can a teacher present children's rights in a classroom? As a human rights educator, Ms. Sarna has developed materials and will share with us activities to help teachers integrate the rights of the child into the curriculum.
14h20- Teaching Peace in the Art Classroom (Ilana Kuska) Our speaker is a creative teacher who works to promote and discuss peace in her own art classroom. She has reached out to youth and inspire them to use art as a media to take action in their school. This workshop will allow you the tools and ideas necessary to represent peace in art.
15h40- Human rights education in the classroom :what works and how can you make it happen!! (Lucie Benoit, Maria-Cécilia Gomez)
As a pedagogical counsellor and speech therapist working in a very multiethnic milieu, our speakers have developed activities and materials to help teachers integrate democracy and human rights education in their classroom and also in school projects. This presentation will give a hands-on description of how they have put this together in their school at the primary level !
