Going Global with the Network
Establishment of sustainable co-operative ties between North and South
"Twinning is contained in these words: What can we do together, that we would not do in the same way and with the same strength, with the same speed, and which could have an impact in distant places such as Acadia and Burkina Faso? [...Sherbrooke and Morocco, Montreal and Nairobi...].''
Jean-Louis Roy, President of Rights & Democracy
Speech presented at the inauguration of the first international twinning of the Rights & Democracy Network in Moncton and Ouagadougou, November 25, 2004.
By creating a university-based Network, Rights & Democracy deliberately chose to work with the next generation of key actors in international cooperation.
While the Network project was still in its initial planning stages, we had already decided to create mechanisms to pair up various Delegations in Canada with Rights & Democracy Delegations overseas. We refer to this as twinning.
A First Twinning
Burkina Faso
Launched in the fall of 2004, the internationalization phase of the Network has led to a first twinning initiative between the Delegations of the Université de Moncton in New Brunswick and the Université de Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso.
